The past three weeks of 2nd grade have really flown by! We have spent a lot of time discussing classroom expectations, and setting up routines for our day. We are now ready to begin reading groups this week. We will be focusing on main idea and details. Students will be completing book check out on their own this year-each student has a different day they will go each week to return books. They may get two books at each check out, as long as they return their two previous books. We will be starting individual check out this week. In writing, we will begin our narrative writing unit.
We are continuing our place value unit in math-really focusing on understanding the value of each digit in a number, the many ways you can make a number (48 tens and 30 ones makes 78, as well as 20 tens and 58 ones, etc.), skip counting by 5, 10, 100 forwards and backwards from any given number between 1-1000, and comparing numbers.
We are finishing up our moon unit, and will begin our first social studies unit when we get back from labor day. We will be studying Georgia's five regions and seven rivers. We have some fun activities planned in the learning commons to show what we have learned about both of these topics!

I hope everyone had a nice, relaxing Spring break! It is hard to believe the 4th quarter is here and there is only a little bit of time left in 2nd grade! While the end of the year does bring on a lot of review skills, there will still be some more content that needs to be learned, so take a look and see what we have been doing and what we have left to do this year!
Students had a fun St. Patrick's Day where they got to complete different St. Patrick themed math and literacy centers for the day.
We had a yummy science lab treat to wrap up our space unit in the science lab. Oreo moon phases was one of their favorite science lab lessons this year!
We finished up our fairy tale, folktale, and fable unit and then moved on to comparing and contrasting in reading. We will be starting our cause and effect unit when we return from the break.
For writing, we finished up opinion writing, and will now be reviewing narrative and informational writing.
In math, students worked on solving money word problems with coins and bills, and needed to know how to use the dollar and cent sign correctly. We are now working on learning the attributes of 2d shapes (and a cube), and this week we will begin partitioning rectangles and circles into equal shares of halves, thirds, and fourths. After that, we will move into making simple arrays and then reviewing previous math standards and strategies.
This week we are finishing up learning about Jimmy Carter and will be moving onto our goods and services unit. Stay tuned for some information about another special 2nd grade day-Goods and Services Day! After that, our last unit in science will be studying life cycles.
That is pretty much it! I have about 2 more weeks left until my due date, so my last day of work is set for April 21st (unless baby Hanson comes early!). Ms. Pellegrini will be my supply teacher, so you will be hearing from her soon.

Check out all the fun things we have had going on these past few weeks:
Students enjoyed learning about different careers during our career lesson presented by our counselor. They really loved the hands on experiences they got to do with each career.
We had a great trip to the King Center last week. Students got to tour museums, watch some videos in a theater, see Dr, King and his wife's graves and the eternal flame, visit Ebenezer Baptist Church, and see his childhood home. It was a busy day!
Today in science lab students finally got to use the pringles cans they brought in earlier this year and made stargazers. They can now look at different constellations through their stargazer. It was a fun way to end our space unit.
As far as academics, in reading we have been reading fables and fairy tales. Don't forget that this Friday is Fairy Tale/Folktale/Fable day and students may dress up as their favorite character from one of these kinds of stories. Students will get to rotate to the other 2nd grade classes and listen to different stories and complete activities about the story they listened to. Don't forget projects are due Wednesday, and we will be presenting projects on Wednesday and Thursday this week. Next week we will begin reading some folktales.
For writing, we have been working on opinion writing. Students are doing well with stating their opinion and giving reasons why they have that opinion, so we are mostly working on introducing our topic in a fun and interesting way, as well as providing details to explain our reasons. We have learned about adjectives and adverbs, so this week we will practice "expanding sentences" by using both kinds of words to come up with a super second grade sentence. We will also work on using more interesting vocabulary (shades of meaning) in our writing. For example, instead of using the word big, students should start using stronger words, such as gigantic, enormous, large, etc.
In math, students learned another way to subtract 3 digit numbers. We call this strategy partial differences.
It basically takes the idea of expanding the numbers in expanded form, and then subtracting them with the regrouping process.
Next week we will begin working on money again (coins and dollars), mostly through word problems. Students will also need to know how to use use the cent sign and dollar symbol correctly.
In Social Studies, we are learning about Jackie Robinson. We will discuss how his courage, patience, and dependability helped our country integrate Major League baseball.
